Vector-Borne Diseases on the Rise

As of June 25, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had confirmed human cases in at least seven states.

Vector-borne diseases, diseases that are spread by insect bites, have been on the rise lately as the climate changes and insects become more prevalent. These viruses are spread through bites from infected insects. In the case of dengue, health officials are urging people to take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.

A drug-resistant and potentially deadly fungus has been spreading rapidly through the US.

The fungus, Candida auris, is resistant to most antifungal drugs and has been linked to several deaths. It is typically found in hospitals and nursing homes, but it has also been found in the community.

COVID-19 rates are still rising across most of the country, fueled by the highly contagious new variants of the virus.

The Omicron variant is now the dominant strain of the virus in the US, and it is more easily spread than previous variants. This has led to a surge in cases, hospitalizations, and deaths.

But West Nile virus, transmitted primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito, continues to be a threat.

The virus can cause serious illness, including encephalitis, meningitis, and even death. There is no specific treatment for West Nile virus, so prevention is key.
